How does Restylane®
work?

Ever wondered how to diminish wrinkles, restore fullness, and make subtle changes to your beauty? Dive into the transformative world of Restylane Dermal Fillers at Divine Laser + Cosmetic, meticulously curated by Dr. Sam.

Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance in your skin, is the key to hydration, fullness, and elasticity. Unfortunately, it diminishes with age, leading to volume loss and the emergence of wrinkles and folds. Restylane dermal fillers employ clear gel formulations of HA, designed to closely mimic the body’s own hyaluronic acid with minimal crosslinking. As the pioneering non-animal stabilised HA filler, Restylane gained FDA approval and has been trusted in over 65 million treatments worldwide.

Entrust your beauty journey to Dr. Sam, the dedicated artist at Divine Laser + Cosmetic. Our Restylane treatments, rooted in the science of HA, bring you minimal downtime and maximum impact. Join the millions who have experienced the artistry of Restylane, where each injection harmonizes facial proportions, providing a natural and enduring glow.

After your treatment, you may experience common side effects, which can include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Headache
  • Tenderness
  • Lump formation
  • Itching at the injection site
  • Impaired hand function

These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 to 18 days in the lips.

Patients should be limited to 6 mL per treatment of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. For treatment of volume deficit in the hands, patients should be limited to 3 mL per hand per treatment.

Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years of age, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years of age.

Restylane products should not be used by people who:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 22 years of age
  • Have recently used drugs that thin the blood or prevent clotting
  • Have had previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria
  • Have serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment
  • Have bleeding disorders
  • Have a known allergy to lidocaine (Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Contour, and Restylane Eyelight all contain lidocaine. Restylane is the only product that does not contain lidocaine)

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that can help to diminish the appearance of wrinkles while restoring volume and fullness in the face and hands, or to re-shape features to meet aesthetic goals, such as achieving a fuller lip or correcting the appearance of a recessed chin.

There are several types of dermal fillers, one being hyaluronic acid (HA). All Restylane fillers use HA gel technology made of transparent hyaluronic acids, which are sugars naturally found in the skin that help provide hydration, fullness, and elasticity.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps provide hydration, fullness, and elasticity. It diminishes as we age, causing skin to lose volume while increasing the chances for wrinkles and folds to appear.

Restylane dermal fillers use a clear gel formulation of HA. Restylane was the first non-animal stabilized HA dermal filler to be approved by the US FDA, and has been used in over 65 million treatments worldwide.

As we age, our skin changes, becoming thinner, losing fat, and no longer looking as plump or smooth as it once did. Facial aging begins in your 20s, when skin firmness starts decreasing as a result of both internal factors (i.e., genetics and natural aging) and external factors (e.g., sun exposure, smoking, stress).

Hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen, and elastin diminish as we age, causing skin to lose volume and increasing the chances for wrinkles and folds to appear. Restylane dermal fillers use a clear gel formulation of HA.

Most Restylane appointments last less than an hour, and results can be seen almost immediately as the added volume begins to smooth away wrinkles.

Initial Restylane treatments are usually complete in one or two sessions, as needed. Depending on your individual body chemistry, you will work with your specialist to determine a maintenance schedule. We always recommend talking to your aesthetic injector or healthcare professional about your individual needs and beauty goals.

Tired-looking eyes can have many causes but are often the result of volume loss under the eyes. People often describe the appearance of “dark circles” and “bags” under the eyes that make them look aged, tired, stressed, or sick as common motivators to seek treatment to correct the undereye area.1 In a clinical study, 87% of patients* thought they looked less tired 18 months after optimal treatment with Restylane Eyelight.

Results may vary depending on your individual body chemistry (metabolism) and the amount of product used. The Restylane Family has several lip fillers, including Restylane Kysse, Restylane Silk, Restylane, and Restylane-L. Restylane Kysse is clinically proven to last up to 1 year. Talk to your injector about the best treatment plan for you.

“Cupid’s bow” lips: The Cupid’s bow is the double curve of the upper lip, resembling the bow of Cupid, Roman god of love. Traditionally, a well-defined upper lip line is thought to help create a more beautiful lip shape.

A symmetrical pout: Typically, achieving better symmetry of the face can help to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look. Sometimes, volume of the lips is naturally asymmetrical, or a scar or injury may have caused volume loss. Filler can be used to address symmetry of the lips and their shape.

“Natural-looking” full lips: When it comes to size and volume, a natural-looking result is key. Restylane Kysse is made with XpresHAn TechnologyTM, for filler that moves with each smile and expression to provide more natural-looking results.

Perioral lines: Also called “smoker’s lines,” “vertical lip lines,” or “barcode lines,” they develop with age and can be smoothed using filler.

Lip color and texture: Restylane Kysse is clinically proven to enhance texture and color of the lips while maintaining a full range of expressions.

Everyone’s facial structure is different, and so are everyone’s ideal lip shape and size. Restylane-L, Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse are designed to provide precise lip shaping and line control, resulting in natural-looking results.

The amount of lip filler you need will vary based on your goals, natural lip size, and other factors. The best way to determine the amount of lip filler you’ll need is to meet an aesthetic injector for an in-person consultation. Each syringe of Restylane lip filler contains 1 mL of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel.

In our Results Gallery, you will find Before & After photos of Restylane patients who received varying amounts of lip filler depending on the product used, from 0.75 mL to 1 syringe (or 1 mL), and up to 1.95 mL, while still achieving natural-looking results.

Here are some useful tips for lip filler aftercare:

  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, talk with your injector before your appointment about medications that may minimize the likelihood of an outbreak. Needle punctures to the lip may increase the likelihood of cold sore reoccurrence.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen), St. John’s wort or high doses of vitamin E supplements.1,2 These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
  • Minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to excessive heat, sun, or UV lamps for the first 24 hours after treatment. Exposure to any of these may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site. Until there is no redness or swelling, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense cold or heat such as sun lamps or sunbathing.

Remember to ask about follow-up appointments and for any additional aftercare instructions from your injector.

Your aesthetic goals will impact the amount of cheek filler needed for treatment. Talk to your injector about what you’re looking for, whether it’s the appearance of dramatically lifted and defined cheekbones (Restylane Lyft) or subtly reclaiming the contour of cheeks (Restylane Contour).

When studied in a clinical setting, the average volume of Restylane Lyft used for cheek augmentation was 3 mL total (3 syringes) at initial treatment, or roughly 1.5 mL per cheek. The average amount used in a study using Restylane Contour to restore midface volume loss was 3.8 mL, or 1.9 syringes per side.

In our Results Gallery, you will find Before & After photos of patients who received as little as 0.5 mL of Restylane Lyft per cheek, or as much as 1.5 mL per cheek. Before & After photos of patients who received Restylane Contour treatment show a range of 1 mL to 2 mL used per cheek.

Restylane Results may vary depending on your individual body chemistry (metabolism) and the amount of product used. The Restylane Family has two cheek fillers – Restylane Contour1 and Restylane Lyft.

Restylane Contour has been clinically proven to improve midface cheek contour for up to 18 months.

Restylane Lyft has been clinically proven to increase fullness in the cheeks for up to 12 months.

Chin filler is used for minimally invasive (non-surgical) augmentation of the chin to improve the chin’s projection or shape. Restylane Defyne can be used to reduce the appearance of a double chin, or correct mild-to-moderate chin retrusion, sometimes called a “weak chin.”

Chin filler can also be used to bring balance to the lower third of the face when a larger-sized lip look is the aesthetic goal. If a “weak chin” is out of proportion with a large lip, the enhancement of the chin will bring these two features into proportion for better harmony of facial features.

Chin filler has been used in minimally invasive (non-surgical) gender-affirming care as well. The shape of the chin can have a “more traditionally masculine” shape, or a “more traditionally feminine” shape. Filler can help in achieving such looks.

In a clinical study of people who received Restylane Defyne in the chin, those that reported some level of swelling reported it lasting between 1 and 7 days.

The occurrence of swelling and the degree of swelling vary for each individual. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years.

The amount of chin filler used will vary based on your goals. Based on clinical studies, for augmentation of the chin region to improve the chin profile, the maximum recommended injected volume per patient and treatment is 4 mL (i.e., 2 mL in the chin and 2 mL in the area inferior to the lower lip, between the two lines from oral commissures up to the pre-jowl sulcus). The safety of injecting greater amounts has not been established.

In our Results Gallery, we have Before & After photos of chin filler patients.

For patients with a “weak chin” and a round face, chin filler can be used to augment the chin projection, which will lessen the appearance of roundness of the face, resulting in a more heart- or oval-shaped appearance.

A double chin may emphasize the roundedness of a face’s shape. Restylane Defyne can be used to reduce the appearance of a double chin.

When studied in a clinical setting, side effects that occurred at the injection site for the use of Restylane Defyne in the chin included swelling, small bumps, redness, pain, tenderness, bruising, and itching. These were mainly mild to moderate reactions that disappeared within 1 to 2 weeks.

60% of patients who reported feeling some level of pain during or after their initial Restylane Defyne treatment reported it lasting 1 to 3 days.

If any symptoms last longer than 2 weeks, you should call your doctor.

Anesthetic lidocaine can significantly reduce pain during and after chin filler treatment. Restylane Defyne contains lidocaine, but your injector may apply some topically before treatment as well.

When studied in a clinical setting, 60% of patients who reported feeling some level of pain during or after their initial Restylane Defyne treatment reported it lasting 1 to 3 days.

Dermal fillers can be used to soften smile lines like nasolabial folds, which are the parentheses-shaped lines that deepen with a smile. Fine lines that start to form around the mouth with age, such as marionette lines, lines at the corners of the mouth, and wrinkles above the upper lip can all be softened with natural-looking results using hyaluronic acid (HA) gel dermal fillers.

Fine lines around the mouth can be smoothed out using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Lines on the lips, the vertical lines that extend out from the lips, the pre-jowl portion of the marionette lines, and wrinkles starting to form at the corners of the mouth can all be softened with flexible hyaluronic acid (HA) gel technology that provides subtle, natural-looking results while restoring a more youthful-looking appearance.

Over time, our skin thins, losing volume and firmness, which leads to appearing signs of aging, such as lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Hyaluronic acid (HA) gel dermal fillers are a non-surgical method for restoring and maintaining a more youthful-looking appearance. The volume of the filler provides support and structure for the skin. For example, Restylane Lyft, when used in the cheek, can give the cheeks needed structure for a lifted, less tired-looking appearance.

Aging skin loses volume and firmness, which leads to telltale signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging. Hyaluronic acid (HA) gel dermal fillers provide support and structure for the skin. To combat a saggy cheek look, Restylane Lyft can give the cheek needed structure for a lifted, less tired-looking appearance, while Restylane Contour restores the natural contour, or cheek definition, for a more youthful-looking appearance.

HA gel dermal fillers provide a non-surgical method with clinically proven safety and efficacy for restoring and maintaining a more youthful-looking appearance. To see Before & After photos, please explore our Results Gallery.

As part of the natural aging process, volume in the hands can deteriorate over time, making them appear aged. Veins, tendons, and bones may become more visible. Hyaluronic acid dermal filler like Restylane Lyft can be used to reverse telltale signs of aging on the back of the hands, such as wrinkles and bony-looking volume loss.

Some Before & After photos of patient results using filler in the back of the hands can be viewed in our Results Gallery.

Do not use if you have severe allergies with a history of severe reactions (anaphylaxis), are allergic to lidocaine or gram-positive bacterial proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, prone to bleeding, or have a bleeding disorder. The safety of use while pregnant or breastfeeding has not been studied. Tell your doctor if you have a history of scarring or pigmentation disorders as these side effects can occur with hyaluronic acid fillers. Tell your doctor if you are planning other cosmetic treatments (i.e., lasers and chemical peels) as there is a possible risk of inflammation at the injection site.

Tell your doctor if you’re taking medications that lower your body’s immune response or affect bleeding, such as aspirin or warfarin, as these medications may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding at the gel injection site. Using these products on gel injection sites with skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infections should be postponed until healing is complete.

The most common side effects are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache, tenderness, lump formation, itching at the injection site, and impaired hand function. Delayed-onset inflammation near the site of dermal filler injections is one of the known adverse events associated with dermal fillers, and cases have been reported to occur at the dermal filler treatment site following viral or bacterial illnesses or infections, vaccinations, or dental procedures. Typically, the reported inflammation was responsive to treatment or resolved on its own. Serious but rare side effects include delayed onset infections, recurrence of herpetic eruptions, and superficial necrosis at the injection site. The risk of unintentional injection into a blood vessel is small but can occur and could result in serious complications, which may be permanent including, vision abnormalities, blindness, stroke, temporary scabs, or permanent scarring of the skin. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
